The Ministry of Health has set new limits and prohibitions on the use of substances in food supplements. The use of clays is prohibited, since it can expose consumers to sources of aluminium, which is the structural constituent of the clay. The EFSA has in fact evaluated the possible risks to human health arising from the presence of aluminium in foodstuffs, fixing the maximum tolerable dose in 1 mg / kg of body weight per week. As for lipoic acid, following the reported adverse reactions, especially
hypoglycemia, food supplements that contain this must be labelled with the warning: “If you are being treated with hypoglycaemic drugs consult your doctor before any use of this product.” The warning must be inserted as of the next production. Finally, the maximum daily intake of niacin has been increased to 48 mg, in accordance with the principles of mutual recognition, based on the opinion of the National Commission for Dietetics and Nutrition of the Ministry of Health, and taking into account the assessments of the EFSA on the safety of the vitamin.
